Glavgosexpertiza, Russia's state expert review body, has approved the project to reconstruct the museum and exhibition complex of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia in Moscow. Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin announced it on 30 September.

What will be built

The reconstruction covers the former storage building, built in 1958, in the inner courtyard of the museum's main building on Tverskaya Street. It will become a modern building with five floors above ground and two below, about 4,000 m² in total.

The new building will house:

  • additional exhibition halls;
  • a modern collection storage and restoration workshops;
  • an education centre for public events;
  • storage for large items in the basement, and a library.

According to the museum, visitors will be able to watch restorers at work and look into the storage.

Who and when

The works will be supervised by the public-law company Unified Construction Customer and are planned to start this year. The project meets current requirements for safety, storage conditions for museum items and visitor comfort.

The museum holds about 1.4 million items, and its library about 1 million volumes. The reconstruction is meant to solve the museum's main problem: a shortage of space for collections and exhibitions.
